Some of us are still in our ‘Hot girl & Brat summer’ mode but as the summer draws to a close its time to stat thinking about Autumn Winter and whats trending this year.
The catwalk and high street stores are already moving into their Autumn ranges and the beginning of September entices us away from the shorts and into embracing our inner cosy girl. I love summer as much as the next person but I can’t help but be excited for Autumn and the change to cosy knits, warm coats and a nice hot coffee on a cold morning.
‘Cosy Girl’ was a massive trend last year and into spring of 2024 so is it going to stick around for Autumn/Winter? Looking at whats trending now I think its safe to say it will. Cosy Girl brought us relaxed, comfortable clothing that was a little more luxurious than our old trackie bottoms and this tipped the trend over from being lazy to chic. Comfortable wide leg trousers, tailored tops and comfy ugg slippers are still everywhere you look and I can’t see them disappearing now that Autumn is around the corner.
Having said that there are a few trends coming off the catwalk that will influence this Winters fashions and although it looks like comfy relaxed clothing is still popular there is an air of sophistication to the styles available that will elevate this look further than before.
So lets take a look at the top trends appearing now and into the next Autumn/Winter season.
Pinks
Following on from last years ‘Barbie’ trend this Autumn we are still seeing pink but in a softer blush than before. In fact a lot of the trends are around ladylike, demure styles that include subtle pinks, bows and ribbons on knitwear.
Soft floaty fabrics mixed with structured blazers and ballet flats still remind us of summer but with a warm outer layer like a wool cardigan to help us transition into Winter.
Ladylike Suits and Blazers
Blazers and structured jackets featured heavily in the fashion shows, especially from the likes of Victoria Beckham and Tommy Hilfiger. They paired them with soft floaty bottoms and tailored shirts which is very reminiscent of vintage women’s fashion. In fact this style has been coined ‘LadyLike Suiting’.
This is a look that can be pulled together easily from items you probably already have. If you’re looking for a new Blazer for the season, choose one in a slightly heavier fabric, tweed and tartan are both popular again and wear it a little oversized to replicate the catwalk look. Wear it with some warm wide leg trousers and your favourite chunky scarf for a really chic finish.
Boho
Bohemian chic was really popular in the summer and this is going to continue into the rest of the year. The floaty dresses and skirts can still be worn as it gets colder by adding suede boots and jackets. Expect to see lots of fringing and crochet knits straight from the 70’s, nearly anyone can pull this look off, its feminine and edgy and easy to add a few pieces into your own wardrobe.
Florals
Boho trends include a lot of delicate florals but larger perennial floral prints became popular earlier in the year and will be for a little while longer. Bold florals in bright colours remind us of summer and can be mixed with tartans or checks for the colder seasons.
Leopard Print
It might be a little Pat Butcher for you but Leopard print is back with a bang. It was on nearly every catwalk in the form of jackets, dresses, trousers and more. If you’re not sure if leopard print trousers are for you try adding a tailored or faux fur jacket to begin with as this is more versatile than other items of clothing and allows you to mix and match your own wardrobe to achieve a look you like. Faux fur is huge this season so you won’t go wrong if its also leopard print!
Transparency & the Slip Dress
Kate Moss and Sienna Miller have brought back transparent slip dresses from the 90’s. These slinky, sexy dresses were worn by all the models back in the day and with a Kate Moss biopic on the horizon they’ve been catapulted back into our lives. Expect to see everyone wearing them to your Christmas party!
It may be a little out of your comfort zone but don’t be afraid to try this look, the drape and length of the dresses work well on many sizes as they elongate the body and sit on your curves in all the right places.
Double Denim
If there is one item of clothing that we return to every season – it would be the denim jacket. I love it because you can wear it with dresses, high heels, boots, trainers and more. Investing in a decent denim jacket is always a good idea and will be your faithful companion until late Autumn. Why not go that bit further and embrace double denim. Denim jackets and denim skirts paired with tall suede boots will make you the envy of all your fashion forward friends. This is probably one of the biggest trends we’ll see this Autumn/Winter and one we can all jump easily.
Tall structured boots
Fashion this year has been heavily focused on the 70s and vintage women’s styles so it was inevitable that these 70’s knee high boots would be brought back. They look great with everything from floaty boho dresses to short skirts and blazers. I think my favourite would be a chunky heeled, Camel coloured pair but you will find them in every colour and texture you can think of. Getting a pair of Knee High boots will be a good investment that will see you through several Autumn/Winters and several different outfits.
Conclusion
I grew up in the 90’s so seeing the resurgence of fashions from that time and how they have been modernised is really exciting to me. I love how designers are taking inspiration from that time as well as the 60’s and 70’s, and turning them into modern garments that just seem to work. It feels fun and sophisticated all at the same time and that’s what fashion should be about.
Some of the new trends will be out of your comfort zone I know they are for me, but its worth challenging ourselves and having a little fun with it. As September rolls around the corner I will be bringing my denim jacket and knee high boots with me.
